Orient Beach St Martin-Vegan and Vegetarian Guide

Orient Beach St Martin Vegan and Vegetarian Guide

Orient Beach St Martin Vegan

Located on the northeastern side of the French side of the Caribbean island St. Martin, Orient Beach is easily one of the islands best beaches. Crystal blue waters, white sand beaches, and countless beach bars and restaurants make this a real Caribbean destination. This beach is famously known for the nude beach that is located on the southern most spot of beach on Orient Bay. While this beach was affected badly by the 2017 hurricane Irma, Orient Beach has worked very hard to recover and rebuild to their original greatness. Although not a hot spot for vegans and vegetarians, I was very pleased to find some great vegan eats on this beach village. Enjoy this Orient Beach St Martin Vegan and Vegetarian guide!

The Best Restaurants for Orient Beach St Martin Vegan and Vegetarian Options

1. Wai Plage

Wai Plage St Martin Vegan
Caribbean Classic Vegan Sandwich

Wai Plage is Orient Beach’s newest restaurant. It opened in January 2020. Like most other St. Martin restaurants, this is a Caribbean grill specializing in seafood with traditional Caribbean flavors with a French flair. The atmosphere of the restaurant is a very typical beach-style bar, with a slight tiki, island vibe. Being a brand new restaurant, everything is in pristine condition. The service staff is incredibly attentive and friendly.

As far as vegan food options, this restaurant serves a vegan Caribbean sandwich. The vegan classic is a sandwich served with cucumber, tomato, carrots, sneak peas, mint, fried plantains, onions and tzatziki. An absolutely delicious and Caribbean inspired dish, I loved my experience here. The reason this restaurant takes the top spot is because they did a great job of providing a vegan entree with a classic Caribbean flavor! Also they make amazing cocktails! Be sure to check them out if you’re in the area!

2. La Playa

La Playa St Martin Vegan
Tofu Coco Cari Poke Bowl

La Playa Orient Beach is a high end hotel with breathtaking views of the Caribbean sea. With a restaurant and bar located directly on Orient Beach, La Playa offers delicious food and atmosphere for a perfect beach lunch. Vegan options at this restaurant were a bit in short supply, but what they do offer is fantastic. For lunch, I had their Tofu Coco Cari Poke Bowl. This consisted of tofu marinated in cari and coconut milk, ginger, cucumber, coriander, edamame, carrots, avocado, red pepper, shallots, and served with a coco cari sauce. Although this was the only option, it was delicious and amazing. I would definitely return to La Playa for another great meal.

3. La Trattoria

La Trattoria St Martin
Vegan Gnocchi

La Trattoria is an Italian restaurant located in the restaurant square known as La Place – Le Village D’Orient. This gathering of restaurants is located just a block off of Orient Beach. This is where you’ll find most of the restaurants in Orient Beach, aside from a few others. La Trattoria offers delicious Italian food. With homemade ingredients, delicious cocktails, and friendly service, you can’t go wrong with this spot. They offer a vegan gnocchi dish. Also, several gluten free pasta dishes. If you are looking for vegetarian options, they offer pizza, pasta, and many other options. While not directly on the beach, this restaurant is one not to miss for dinner. Although, they are only open for dinner. So, obviously if you are just spending the day in Orient Beach then this would not be an option. But check them out for dinner sometime!

4. Kontiki

Kontiki is a high end, beachfront restaurant offering direct access to Orient Beach. There is a very sophisticated vibe at this French restaurant, specializing in gourmet Asian-fusion cuisine. Featuring a veggie wrap and the famous Impossible burger, Kontiki offers a nice experience for the plant-based customer. If you are going to spend the day on the beach, Kontiki is a great choice. They have great service, great cocktails, and some fantastic music to relax the day away underneath the Caribbean sun. The vegan food here was very good. I hope you enjoy Kontiki as much as I did.

Veggie Options Overview

Overall, vegan and vegetarian options on Orient Beach are a little difficult to find. Aside from the restaurants I have highlighted above, you can definitely find food options at other restaurants in the Orient Beach area, but it’s difficult. Some of the other options though were not good enough for me to highlight on this blog post. If you are a vegetarian, you honestly won’t have a hard time finding something to eat in this area. French food is very well known for being heavy in dairy products, specifically cheese and BUTTER! But if you are all about dairy, you’ll be in heaven.

If looking for vegan specific food, you might have a more difficult time. For vegans, I would probably stick to the restaurants I have highlighted above. Also, keep in mind that with changing trends, it would not be surprising to find more vegan food available at existing restaurants on Orient Beach in the future. Absolutely, you will be able to find great food. Sometimes it just takes a little more work. I was surprised at how few restaurants offer a veggie burger. This is usually a simple addition to the menu. But very few restaurants offered one.

In conclusion, Orient Beach is one the best beaches on St. Martin, if not THE best. I have spent several months on this island, with my Airbnb being on Orient Beach. If you are looking for a place to stay on Orient Beach, look into the rentals at Mont Vernon. These are located directly on the beach and are just a 5 minute walk on the beach to the main restaurant district. I always stay here when I visit St Martin and absolutely love it!
